The 38th annual Roho Fishing Tournament was held at the Beach Island Marina on Norris Lake on May 3 and 4, 2008. The Roho Fishing Tournament is the only fund raising event held by the local civic club. Proceeds from the ticket sales are used to sponsor the Christmas shopping spree for children in the area who have been selected by teachers as needing help in order to have gifts for Christmas. With the initial income from this year's tournament, along with the outstanding support from area citizens and merchants, the Rohos are looking forward to another great shopping spree. The early count on ticket sales looks good. The goal was to sell 3600 tickets, and we exceeded that goal by selling 3910 tickets and having 71 people agree to sponsor a child. Roho member Eddie Beeler was the top ticket seller with sales of 1100 tickets. Congratulations and thanks, Eddie. On the shopping spree in 2007, a total of $24,500 was spent on the children -- $100 for clothing for each child and $30 each for toys. In addition, each child was given a pair of athletic shoes donated by an anonymous sponsor. There were 179 children who shopped the local Wal-Mart store in Middlesboro before being treated to lunch and a visit with Santa. Plans for this year include treating 189 children from 16 schools in the tri-state area to shopping sprees in December.
